A lightbox sign is a rectangular or custom-shaped illuminated sign consisting of a frame (the box), an internal light source (LED or fluorescent), and a face panel — typically a printed or opal acrylic sheet. When illuminated, the face glows evenly, making the graphics highly visible day and night.
Lightbox signs are commonly used for shopfront identification, under-awning signs, menu boards and interior displays. Achurch Signs & Designs manufactures standard and custom-sized lightbox signs in-house.
An intracut sign (also called a reverse-cut or push-through sign) has letters or shapes cut directly through a solid face panel (typically aluminium or acrylic). A light source behind the panel shines through the cut-out shapes, creating a glowing letter or logo effect.
The face of the sign remains solid and opaque, with only the cut-out areas glowing. This produces a very clean, premium and modern look. Achurch Signs & Designs manufactures intracut illuminated signs in-house.
A pylon sign (also called a pole sign or totem sign) is a freestanding sign mounted on one or two poles, typically positioned at the entrance to a property, shopping centre, service station or industrial estate. Pylon signs are designed for high visibility from the road and can be illuminated or non-illuminated.
They often feature multiple tenant panels. Achurch Signs & Designs designs, manufactures and installs pylon signs for commercial and government clients.
Large format printing (also called wide format printing) refers to digital printing on large substrates — typically anything wider than 1.5 metres. It is used for banners, window graphics, wall graphics, vehicle wraps, billboards, building wraps, exhibition displays and point-of-sale materials.
Achurch Signs & Designs offers wide format digital printing as well as flatbed printing directly onto rigid substrates such as acrylic, PVC, Corflute and aluminium composite panels.
Vehicle signage refers to graphics, lettering or full-colour wraps applied to cars, vans, trucks and fleet vehicles. Options range from simple cut vinyl lettering with a phone number and logo, to partial wraps, to full vehicle wraps that cover the entire exterior.
Vehicle signage is one of the most cost-effective forms of advertising — a wrapped vehicle can generate thousands of impressions per day. Achurch Signs & Designs designs, prints and installs vehicle graphics for all types of vehicles.
3D fabricated letters are custom-made dimensional letters or logos that stand out from a surface, giving signage depth, perspective and a premium appearance. They are manufactured by cutting or routing letter shapes from materials such as aluminium, acrylic or PVC, then forming the sides (returns) and finishing with paint or powder coating.
At Achurch Signs & Designs, we fabricate 3D letters in-house to any depth, and they can be illuminated (front-lit or halo/backlit with LED) or non-illuminated. They are ideal for shopfronts, building facades, reception areas and wayfinding.
Front-lit 3D letters have a translucent acrylic face that glows from the inside — the light shines forward through the face of the letter. They are brighter and more visible from a distance.
Halo-lit (backlit) letters have an opaque face and the LED light shines out from behind the letter onto the wall, creating a glowing halo effect around each letter. They create a more premium, sophisticated look, especially at night. Both options are available from Achurch Signs & Designs.
The most common materials for 3D fabricated letters are:
Aluminium — durable, weather-resistant, ideal for outdoor use. Can be powder-coated to any colour. Used for both illuminated and non-illuminated letters.
Acrylic — available in a wide range of colours and finishes. Ideal for illuminated letters as it transmits light evenly. Can be clear, frosted, coloured or mirrored.
PVC (Foamex) — lightweight and cost-effective. Suitable for interior signs and lower-budget applications. Not recommended for long-term outdoor use.
An illuminated sign is any sign that uses internal or external lighting to make it visible at night or in low-light conditions. Types of illuminated signs include lightbox signs, LED signs, neon signs, illuminated 3D fabricated letters (front-lit or halo-lit), intracut signs, and pylon signs with illuminated panels.
Achurch Signs & Designs specialises in all types of illuminated signage, including LED and traditional neon.
Traditional neon signs use glass tubes filled with neon or argon gas that glow when electrified, producing a warm, distinctive light. They are handcrafted and have a classic, retro aesthetic.
LED signs use light-emitting diodes to produce bright, energy-efficient illumination. LED signs are cheaper to run, require less maintenance, have a longer lifespan and are more flexible in colour options. Modern LED flex neon can mimic the look of traditional neon at lower cost.
Achurch Signs & Designs (formerly Achurch Neonworks) has decades of experience with both traditional neon and modern LED signage.
Yes — significantly. LED lighting uses up to 70–80% less energy than equivalent fluorescent lighting and has a lifespan of 50,000+ hours compared to 10,000–15,000 hours for fluorescent tubes. This means lower electricity bills and far less frequent maintenance and tube replacement.
If you have an older fluorescent lightbox or illuminated sign, retrofitting it with LED is a cost-effective upgrade. Achurch Signs & Designs can assess and retrofit existing signs.

Common materials for outdoor signs include:
Aluminium composite panels (ACM/Alucobond) — for flat signs and fascias
Powder-coated aluminium — for fabricated letters and frames
Acrylic — for illuminated faces and 3D letters
PVC/Foamex — for lightweight signs and cut letters
Corflute — for temporary and construction signs
Stainless steel or brass — for premium plaques and feature letters
Achurch Signs & Designs uses high-quality, weather-resistant materials suited to the Australian climate, with UV-stable inks and finishes for long-lasting outdoor performance.
For best results, we prefer vector artwork files — ideally Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or EPS files with fonts outlined. PDF files with embedded fonts and high-resolution images are also acceptable.
For printed signs, high-resolution images (minimum 150 dpi at final print size) in TIFF, PNG or PDF format are suitable. If you only have a low-resolution logo, our in-house design team can redraw it as a vector. We can also create artwork from scratch based on your brief.
Yes. Achurch Signs & Designs uses professional colour-matching processes to ensure your signs match your brand colours accurately. For printed signs, we use calibrated wide format printers with colour profiles matched to your brand's Pantone or CMYK specifications.
For painted or powder-coated fabricated signs, we can match to Pantone, RAL or custom colour specifications. Providing your brand style guide or colour codes at the quoting stage helps us achieve the most accurate result.
